Catalytic Ammonia Oxidation

To oxidize ammonia-containing exhaust gas streams from various processes, Prantner uses a catalyst that selectively oxidizes gaseous ammonia into environmentally neutral elemental nitrogen. The NOx formation rate is extremely low, making it easy to comply with nitrogen oxide limits even at high ammonia concentrations.

By combining this selective catalyst with proven recuperative or regenerative catalytic process technology, exhaust gases with high ammonia content from various industrial processes are reliably cleaned.

Catalytic afterburning for the treatment of ammonia-containing exhaust gas streams is used, among other things, for exhaust air purification in the following areas:

  • Drying processes
  • Chemical production processes
  • Coating plants
  • Food industry
  • Exhaust air from desorption systems
Procedural Principle

The process exhaust air is drawn in by a process air fan and first preheated in a heat exchanger using the purified exhaust air; it is then brought to the reaction temperature using an electric heater or a gas burner and subsequently oxidized in the catalytic reactor to form elemental nitrogen and water.

The oxidation takes place in a specially designed reactor at temperatures ranging from 280°C to 450°C. After transferring part of the combustion heat to the supply air, the purified exhaust air is released into the atmosphere via a stack.

Catalytic Oxidation of Ammonia

The image shows a system for the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. The system, designed to treat approximately 3,000 m³/h, is fully integrated into a 40-foot container along with the associated packed-bed scrubber for wet dust removal. The system reliably reduces ammonia concentrations of several g/m³ NH₃ to levels well below the regulatory limits. The process has the advantage that ammonia is oxidized into environmentally neutral nitrogen without leaving any residues.

The catalytic treatment of ammonia-containing exhaust gas streams is used, among other things, in drying processes, chemical production processes, coating plants, the food industry, and municipal applications.

The system was delivered ready for operation and connection.
